Did you know that walkways in Chicago, Stockholm and London now use technology to harness energy from footsteps and generate power?
Our Coastal Walkway is epic, and subject to a business case and the NZTA, NPDC plans to begin making it even better.
We’re looking at extending it from Bell Block to Waitara and we want to know what we should include along the way.
NPDC North Ward councillor Colin Johnston says there are a number of things that could be included.
“NPDC has set aside about $4 million for the project and we’re talking about including things like artworks, viewing platforms, exercise equipment or selfie-stands,” says Cr Johnston. “We’ve also been looking at what innovations are being used at other world-leading walkways. Some are making use of technology that generates power from people’s footsteps and using it to operate things like lights. Our walkway is considered world-class and we want to keep it that way. If other cities can use bold innovations then we can look at them too.”
NPDC wants to hear what other ideas are out there.
Let’s Kōrero is your chance to feed us ideas about some big projects on our books, that we’re working on as part of our latest Annual Plan, which includes an operating budget of approximately $150 million.
