Tour the New Plymouth Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant

Tour of the wastewater treatment plant

Our Tours

Join one of our knowledgeable guides behind the scenes at our water treatment plant or our wastewater treatment plant and find out how water and wastewater is treated.

At the water treatment plant you will see how we treat water from the Waiwhakaiho river before it goes into the pipes and comes out your taps.

At the wastewater treatment plant find out how we treat wastewater, like the water that comes from washing machines, toilets and showers.

Visiting New Plymouth’s treatment plants is a great way to gain an understanding of the processes involved and get an appreciation for the volume of water treated each day. It also highlights many of the challenges faced at the plants.

The treatment plants are industrial sites and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your safety is important to us so please ensure you read and understood the tour information and visitor guidelines before booking your tour.

Visitor Guidelines

While we endeavour to accommodate everyone it is important to note that both tours involve walking, climbing stairs, moving around narrow walkways and being around water.

Unfortunately due to the industrial nature we have no facilities for, and cannot accommodate, young children, infants or strollers. Please let us know if you have someone with limited mobility and we will discuss how this can be best accommodated.

It is up to the organisation/teacher to provide an acceptable adult to student ratio.

For health reasons if members of your group have been vomiting or have had diarrhoea in the three days prior to the tour, they will be unable to attend.
