Every year the we offer scholarships to assist promising students to undertake tertiary study in areas related to local government. This helps address skill shortages and encourages and retains a quality workforce for us and district. 

The scholarships cover the cost of fees for each year of undergraduate degree, up to four years if satisfactory progress is made.

Selection criteria

Candidates must:

1. Consider themselves local to New Plymouth District and live in the district prior to beginning their qualification (they may live outside the district due to current study).
2. Demonstrate an academic ability to perform well in working towards a qualification, but the selection committee will consider other factors such as character, leadership qualities and contribution to cultural and/or sporting activities.
3. Be about to start, or already studying for, a qualification relevant to local government. The types of scholarships that are offered are determined by the needs of the organisation each year.
4. Be New Zealand citizens or have New Zealand permanent resident status.

Conditions of acceptance

1. Successful candidates will be bonded to us for two years after completing their studies. 
2. Receipt of the following year’s fees is dependent on achieving a B average.  If the recipient fails more than 20 per cent of their course they will be required to repay that year’s fees to us. 
3. Successful candidates must work for us, under normal employment conditions, for 50 days each year during they are studying, which will be three years or four by mutual agreement.
4. Successful candidates must achieve their qualification within the agreed time, which will be three years or four (by mutual agreement).  Any failure to qualify for completion of the course of study, within the agreed timeframe, without agreement of both parties will be a breach of these conditions.
5. Successful candidates must provide us with their examination results each year.
6. Successful candidates must keep us informed of any change to their course of study or intended major subject.

Any breaking of these conditions, without mutual consent of the council and recipient, will result in the student being required to pay some, or all, of the scholarship money back to the council.

We reserve the right to terminate the agreement, at no further cost to either us or the student, at any time.

How to apply

Candidates must complete the application form and return it to New Plymouth District Council, Scholarships Application, Private Bag 2025, New Plymouth 4342.

Your application must include referees, details of your course of study or degree being undertaken, previous academic performance and activities you are involved in. An interview may be required.

Closing date: Applications for 2008 scholarships have closed.
