The growing school needed an assembly hall and a new hall was opened in 1973. It was funded by rates, loans, community fundraising, the Taranaki Education Board, sale of the old hall, and grants from the League of Mothers and the lottery. <br /><br />The hall was a joint venture between the Council and the school and was originally managed by a joint committee but is now Council-managed. The clubs raised half the money for the building of the gymnasium and members donated their time to build the facility. The Council became involved so that grants for war memorial funding could be given. A condition of this funding was that the New Plymouth City Council own the land and the gymnasium. </p> <p>The two rugby clubs merged in the late 1980s.
