The Council is revising its Naming and Renaming of Roads, Private Roads and Rights-of-Way policy.
As part of a three-year review cycle, the policy incorporates lessons learnt from the 2015 Dreaver subdivision, and findings from a 2016 review of the policy. It also brings the policy into line with new Land Information New Zealand requirements.
Key changes proposed include:
- Where required, the Council will facilitate agreement between a developer and affected parties;
- Roads in retirements villages will now be subject to the policy;
- Eligible road names will have the image of the RSA Poppy placed on the sign; and
- Names of a living person may be proposed for a road name but will be subject to certain conditions.
Initial feedback was sought from key stakeholders including iwi, developers, retirement village operators, the Poppy Places Trust and Council management and staff.
The Council’s Planning Committee agreed in March 2018 to publicly consult on the proposed policy.
