Youth Week Art Exhibition @ RealTART

Location: RealTART Gallery, 19 Egmont St, New Plymouth
A dynamic showcase of contemporary ‘graf artworks’ from young people living within the district.

Artworks have been sourced from a series of workshops developed by New Plymouth District Council to provide:

• Young people with the opportunity to learn about contemporary art techniques and commercial opportunity within the ‘graf art’ genre; and
• To provide a positive intervention for ‘youth at risk’ to reduce the incidence of tagging and graffiti vandalism through positive activities that build on young people’s talents in the arts rather than engaging in anti-social behaviour.

The workshop sessions clearly placed ‘graf art’ in context and made the necessary distinction between ‘street art’ and ‘graffiti vandalism’.

Young people were encouraged to produce work for display and sale, therefore the notion of a public art exhibition was something young people wished to be involved with.

For many young people this will be the first time they will have showcased their work and it will be an exciting event to share with their peers, families and community.

The workshops were held in April/May 2008, facilitated by Phil Jones, a professional graffiti artist and hosted by Waves Youth Health Trust.
