Govett-Brewster Art Gallery

LEADING THE WAY IN CONTEMPORARY ART

A Govett-Brewster Art Gallery visitor views the work of Jayce Salloum in his exhibition everything and nothing and other works from the ongoing project ‘untitled’ 1999-2008.

Premier contemporary art

The Govett-Brewster is New Zealand's premier contemporary art museum and home to the collection of modernist filmmaker and kinetic sculptor Len Lye. The gallery is committed to developing a contemporary art museum that is recognised internationally for its global vision and special commitment to the Pacific region.

The gallery maintains and develops a contemporary art collection and presents a diverse programme of exhibitions and events. Through programmes that extend beyond its walls, the gallery also aims to foster the development and interpretation of contemporary art by developing new audiences and new possibilities for artists within contemporary culture.

Historically, the Monica Brewster Trust Deed established a close relationship between the council and the gallery. That relationship remains intact and, in addition to providing core operational funding for the gallery, the council has been the gallery's principal stakeholder and strategic partner since its opening in 1970.

The council is also represented on the Len Lye Foundation.
