Specific NPDC employment policies and benefits

Employment at the council is guided by the local authority "Good Employer" employment principle.

A "good employer" operates a personnel policy containing provisions necessary for the fair and proper treatment of employees in all aspects of their employment. These include: 

  • Good and safe working conditions.
  • An equal employment opportunities programme.
  • The impartial selection of suitably qualified persons for appointment.
  • Recognition of the aims and aspirations of Maori people, the employment requirements of Maori people, and the need for greater involvement of Maori people in local government. 
  • Opportunities for the enhancement of the abilities of individual employees

Renumeration policy

We have adopted the following model to review the way in which it integrates the various elements of remuneration, performance and rewards. It recognises that there are seven key elements to effectively managing human resources within the organisation:

EEO Policy

We operate an EEO Policy. This includes:

  • Providing the opportunity and resources for members of EEO groups, or those who wish to network on EEO issues, to attend meetings during working hours.
  • Providing for discussion between management and EEO groups.

Groups of employees recognised as EEO groups include:

  • Maori people.
  • Women.
  • People with disabilities.
  • Minority/ethnic cultures.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

The purpose of an EAP is to provide employees with access to counselling services when they have personal problems affecting them.

Up to five sessions per problem are provided free. If the problem involves another person in your immediate family (children, spouse or partner), or a colleague – they can attend sessions with you.

The programme is not compulsory – it is up to employees to decide whether to use the service.

Healthy Staff Programme

As part of our commitment to encouraging employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle, we provide employees with the opportunity of joining the Healthy Staff Programme.

Staff may choose one of the following activities and will be subsidised up to a maximum of $100 per annum.

  • Aquatic Centre - gym/swim/sauna.
  • YMCA – gym.
  • Other gym memberships.
  • Weight reduction programme.
  • Nutritional wellness programme.
  • Massage.

Westpac Employee Pac – Premium

We have got together with Westpac to offer staff some special treatment. With Employee Pac - Premium, Westpac is offering big savings on personal banking for as long as you are a permanent employee with us.

Westpac describes the package as 'mates rates': "Quite simply, Employee Pac - Premium is all about saving you money. For example, if you get a home loan* or a personal loan with Westpac, you won’t have to pay establishment charges and you’ll be eligible for special discounted interest rates. Westpac will also waive the annual account charges on your Westpac standard or Gold MasterCard and you could get a 10 per cent discount on your Home, Contents, Vehicle and Boat Cover insurance premiums."

*Applies to home loans over $50,000.
