Student Scholarship Terms and Conditions

  1. The award shall be known as the New Plymouth District Council Student Scholarship.
  2. The purpose of the award is to provide financial support for successful candidates and for them to gain valuable work experience in the local government sector and with New Plymouth District Council. 
  3. Applicants can be enrolled at any level between (and including) first and masters year of tertiary study.
  4. Applicants for the award must be a New Zealand citizen or have New Zealand permanent resident status, and be local to the New Plymouth District.
  5. Applicants must be about to start, or already studying for, a qualification relevant to local government in specified fields to be determined each year by NPDC’s workforce needs.
  6. The Selection Panel will consider applicants’ academic ability to perform well in working towards a qualification, and other factors such as suitability for the public sector, character, qualities of leadership and contribution to cultural and/or sporting activities.
  7. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by the manager whom they will be responsible to should their application be successful and may be required to undergo personality profiling and ability testing as part of the selection process.
  8. The value of the scholarship covers the cost of fees for each year of the award.
  9. NPDC requires recipients to work a minimum of 10 weeks at the Council each year and they are employed under normal employment conditions and normally during study breaks.
  10. Recipients must submit their academic results to the Council for each year of their award and a B average must be maintained or the scholarship may be withdrawn and the student may be required to reimburse any monies paid back to Council.
  11. The student must achieve their qualification within the agreed time, and any failure to qualify for completion of the course of study, within the agreed timeframe, without agreement of NPDC is considered a breach of the scholarship.
  12. NPDC bonds its recipients for up to 2 years after completing their study and different bonds exist for recipients under 18 and for those over 18.
  13. The Council reserves its right to terminate the agreement, at no further cost to either the Council or the student, at any time.
