Job Description


Position title: Aquatic Centre Operations Assistant
Reports to: Manager Aquatic Recreation Operations

Purpose of the role

1. To ensure the successful customer-focused, fun, safe, clean, well-managed and sustained high-quality operation of the Aquatic Centre, programmes, events and services.

2. To assist with the daily quality control of Aquatic Centre environment including ensuring:

  • Compliance with health and safety procedures.
  • Top quality customer focus.
  • Compliance with daily work schedules.
  • Compliance with water quality standards.
  • Top quality presentation of all areas of activity.
  • Adherence to high quality plant management practices.

3. To assist in delivering positive leadership and guidance for aquatic recreation centre staff.

4. To lifeguard pools and assist the Team Leaders in the supervision of other operations staff. Return to top

Key relationships

Internal: Direct reports, Programme and Events staff, Human Resources.
External: Customers, sponsors, clubs, clients, citizens and visitors to the New Plymouth District.

Key responsibilities

Aquatic Centre operations (50 per cent of job, high importance)

Means:

  • Assisting the Team Leader Aquatic Operations with positive leadership, which demonstrates strong support and strongly supports other operations staff to comply with management procedures and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Assisting the Team Leader Aquatic Operations in the development of new and the review of existing operations procedures and policy.
  • Ensuring records are created of relevant operational information, collating and presenting in a timely manner to assist with review of operating procedures and policy.
  • Assisting with setting relevant goals and directions for operational areas to meet changing needs.
  • Ensuring employees are kept up-to-date on direction of procedures and policies.
  • Liaising with Building Maintenance Officer Parks and Aquatic Venues to ensure high quality presentation and reliability.

Expected results:

  • Assist the Team Leader Aquatic Operations with leadership, supervision, and support.
  • Fully understand and carry out required duties, in a positive manner, displaying functional behaviour. 
  • Operations functions are carried out as required.
  • Assistance is given to the ongoing development and reviewing of operational procedures.
  • Give assistance to ensure pools are maintained at levels set in the specifications and/or asset management plans.
  • Lifeguard pools and assist Team Leaders in supervising other staff to ensure good lifeguarding standards are met.

Quality assurance (30 per cent of job, high importance)

Means:

  • Ensuring that top quality control of all of the technical aspects of Aquatic Centre operations occurs to create and maintain a positive fun, safe, clean, customer-focused and well-managed environment.
  • Ensuring relevant health and safety procedures are adhered to for staff and customers.
  • Undertaking specific projects and programmes as required.

Expected results:

  • Top quality aquatic recreation centre operations support is delivered to accepted national standards, relevant government legislation, current Council policy and to meet community needs.
  • Specific projects and programmes are delivered.

Operations support of Recreation Programmes and Events Team (20 per cent of job, high importance)

Means:

  • Ensuring top quality operations support is delivered appropriately to support the success of Aquatic programmes, events and services.
  • Maintaining positive relationships with Programmes and Events Team members and provide positive assistance in support of their work. 

Expected results:

  • Top quality operations support is delivered, on time, to quality as scheduled to ensure the top quality success of programmes, events and services.

Cognitive competencies

  • Absence of allergies to chlorine and other pool cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to stand and move for long periods.
  • Cardio-vascular fitness for age group.
  • Clear diction.

Qualifications and knowledge

  • Hold a current first aid certificate.
  • Hold a relevant lifeguarding qualification.
  • Water Treatment Certificate an advantage.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Driver’s licence.

Experience

  • Leadership experience in an aquatic recreation facility.
  • Customer service.

Specific Terms and Conditions

The general conditions of appointment are set out in the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre On-call/Casual Terms and Conditions.  The main features and job specific features are set out below:

a) Remuneration
Depending on experience and qualifications, the hourly rate will be between $12.75 and $16.92.

b) Hours of Work
As and when required.

c) Dress
The appointee shall be issued with an Aquatic Centre uniform which must be maintained in a tidy condition.

d) Health and Safety
The appointee shall be required to wear appropriate safety equipment as and when necessary and cooperate and participate in the Council’s health and safety programme. Safety equipment will be provided by New Plymouth District Council.
