Kids Voting Programme

GATHERING INFORMATION ABOUT THE ELECTION PROCESS

Two girls holding election information.

Making voting real for kids

We took part in the Kids Voting programme run in conjunction with the 2007 local government elections.

The programme, run through schools, is designed to raise awareness among young people about New Zealand’s electoral processes by giving year nine students the opportunity to participate in an authentic voting experience.

Students voted for real candidates, on real ballot papers, with the results almost mirroring those from the real election.

Some of the students involved in Kids Voting listening to the candidates. Over 250 students participated in the 2007 Kids Voting. They were from Spotswood College, Sacred Heart Girls' College, Te Pihipihinga Kakano mai I Rangiatea and Coastal Taranaki School participated

2007 Kids voting results

Note: A number of candidates were unavailable to attend the forum, but the students had access to the candidate booklet which included short biographies from every candidate.
