Let's Go

In June 2010 New Plymouth District Council was one of two Councils (the other was Hastings) awarded a combined $7 million over two years to develop walking and cycling initiatives.

We have branded our project "Let's Go". Let's Go is all about getting our community to choose walking, cycling or the bus for short trips instead of the car. Opens the Let's Go website in this window.

We aim to encourage people out of their cars and onto our spectacular shared pathways and streetscapes by making walking and cycling the easiest transport options.

So why not give it a go and choose a different way to get to work or school!

Go to the Let's Go website to find out more about the project, log your active transport trips and be in to win great prizes.

What is a walking and cycling model community?

A package of works funded by NZTA and local partners to ‘fast track’ a community that can change travel behaviour through improved transport choices.

What’s the advantage of being a model community?

  • New Plymouth will receive ongoing national and international interest.
  • Considerable advancement of sustainable transport infrastructure and education and encouragement projects.
  • A robust monitoring and evaluation programme to ensure best value and success.
  • A large transport modal shift.
  • Maximise the take up of the new bus service.
  • And of course the funding from NZTA to help fund the initiatives.

How’s it going to work?

We’re going to take a three pronged approach focused on enabling, educating and encouraging people to make the shift from cars to walking and cycling.

How will these developments be funded?

The NZTA funding of $3.71m combined with money from NPDC will result in $5.4m being spent on infrastructure ($1.46m in year one and $3.94m in year two); and $1.17m on community programmes ($0.585m each year).
