Bell Block Hall

Facilities: Bell Block Hall is one of the largest urban halls in New Plymouth District. It is well equipped with two badminton courts, a basketball hoop, stage, toilets, store, supper room, upstairs viewing gallery and foyer. The changing rooms have showers and the kitchen has an oven and other cooking facilities. Capacity is 500 with tables and seating for 200 people. Gas heating.

Casual users: Hall users that book a hall for a one off event; one that does not occur on a regular (weekly, monthly or annual) basis.
Regular users (Category 1): Hall users that have a regular (weekly, monthly or annual) booking and have a membership that contains less than 60 per cent children and superannuitants
Regular users (Category 2): Hall users that have a regular (weekly, monthly or annual) booking and have a membership that contains 60 per cent or more children and superannuitants.
Note, children are under 14 years of age.

History

By the late 1960s the original Bell Block Hall on the south side of Devon Road had reached the end of its useable life. The growing school needed an assembly hall and a new hall was opened in 1973. It was funded by rates, loans, community fundraising, the Taranaki Education Board, sale of the old hall, and grants from the League of Mothers and the lottery.

The hall was a joint venture between the Council and the school and was originally managed by a joint committee but is now Council-managed. The facility is 819m2 the maximum capacity is 780 people.
