Aotearoa

AOTEAROA, LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD.

Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud sculpture by Michael Smither.

Artist: Michael Smither.

Located in Water Lily Lake, Brooklands Park.

Created in 2007, Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud, is a sculpture by Michael Smither, one of New Zealand's best-known artists.

Aotearoa comprises four white-painted bronze units of the same cloud shape, with each unit rotated to present a different view.

Michael Smither became a keen observer of clouds when he lived on New Plymouth's Carrington Rd in the 1980s. This resulting artwork is designed to hover over and be reflected in the water.

The artwork was presented to New Plymouth in October 2007, and placed in the lake where the artist had enjoyed his studies of clouds amongst nature.
