Civil Defence

Taranaki Emergency Management

The Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management Group (CDEM) is responsible for planning and preparing for a whole range of emergencies in Taranaki and for co-ordinating risk reduction, readiness, response and recovery.

We are part of the Taranaki CDEM group, along with representatives from Stratford and South Taranaki district councils and Taranaki Regional Council. The group is administered by Taranaki Regional Council.

Seismic monitoring

To ensure adequate and early warning of any volcanic activity, the Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management Group has installed the Taranaki Volcano Seismic Network: A group of five seismometers designed to gather accurate information about earthquake activity. From this information it can be determined if it is a volcanic earthquake.

The seismometers have been installed at five sites at various altitudes. This monitoring may provide weeks or even months of warning that something is starting to happen under the mountain.

Civil defence text alerts

You can now receive text message updates on an impending or current civil defence emergency in Taranaki.

The messages will be short and will most likely include advice for people to turn on their radios or go to the TRC website for further information about a developing emergency.

Texts will be managed and updated as necessary by emergency management staff.

It is a FREE service from the Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management Group.Civil Defence text alerts logo.
