Rates Rebates and Remissions

Rates rebates and remissions are available for those on benefits or very low incomes and for community and sporting groups.

What is a rates rebate?

The Department of Internal Affairs runs a rates rebate scheme that in some cases allows for a refund or partial discount on rates. The scheme is administered by the council and generally applies to those on benefits or very low incomes.

Am I eligible for a rates rebate?

There are three factors that determine a person’s eligibility: Their level of income, their level of rates and the number of dependents. Depending on their rates and number of dependents, a single person with up to $20,000 in income and a married couple with a combined income up to $25,276 might be eligible for a rebate.

A quick way to check is to use the online rebate calculator on the Department of Internal Affairs website.

If you think you meet the criteria, or you would like help to determine your eligibility, the council's  rebate applications team will help you confirm your status.

How to apply for a rates rebate?

Please contact the council to make an appointment to see a staff member who will calculate whether you are eligible for a rebate. The best time to do this is in August, once the first instalment of rates has been received.

What to bring with you
When meeting the council’s rebate applications team, you will need the following information:

  • Your benefit number and type of benefit.
  • If you have not been on the same benefit for the 12 months from 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008, bring a Summary of Earnings or a Personal Tax Summary certificate from Inland Revenue. (If you have been on the same benefit during this period, then a certificate is not needed.)
  • Details of income including bank interest, share earnings and income from other sources.
  • Rates invoice.

What is a rates remission?

A rates remission reduces or wipes out a rates bill. A rates remission usually applies to community and sporting groups.

How do I apply for a remission of penalties?

By letter, facsimile, email, telephone or by using the rates remission form available here or from council offices.
