Rates Change of Name and Ownership

Rates records must show the same ownership details as the property’s certificate of title.

How do I change the name on my rate account when I get married?

Please contact your solicitor who will forward the relevant notification to the council.

How do I delete a name when the owner/joint owner is deceased?

Please contact the solicitor handling the estate and they will forward the relevant notification to the council.

How do I delete a name because of a relationship separation?

In the event of a relationship separation the rates record can only be changed once the matrimonial/ relationship settlement has been completed.  Please contact the solicitor who will be handling the settlement and they can forward the appropriate notification of the transaction, i.e. change of ownership, or a copy of the amended Certificate of Title to the council.

What happens if the property now has a rate paying tenant?

Please contact the council for advice.

Who is responsible for paying the rates during a change of ownership?

The solicitors involved will apportion the rates between the vendor (seller) and purchaser (buyer). The preferred method when an instalment has been issued to the vendor is for the solicitor/vendor to pay that instalment and receive a credit from the purchaser.

How do I get a refund during a sale when my account is in credit?

If a property is in credit when it is sold or if the vendor (seller) and their solicitor pay a current instalment the council will issue a refund to the solicitor for them to reimburse their client.
