Award-winning youth!

The Young Achievers' Awards is an annual Youth Subcommittee event that recognises young people aged 12-24 years who are working towards promoting a positive image of youth within New Plymouth District.

The 2008 Young Achievers Award nominations open on Monday 15 September 2008 with the award ceremony on Thursday 30 October 2008.

Nomination forms will be available from all district high schools, district libraries and the New Plymouth District Council.

Award categories


Youth Development Award
This award is aimed at recognising those young people who have made a positive contribution to youth development in our district physically, socially, spiritually or academically.

Most Outstanding Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Award
Gaining qualifications and on-the-job training is now an important step in young people’s transition from school to work. This award seeks to give confidence to those students who have worked diligently or made significant personal progress through 2007. This award encompasses learners from high school through to tertiary training.

Community Service Award
This award is aimed at recognising those who have made significant contribution to building community spirit and well-being. This could be a volunteer or paid position within the community.

Art Award
This award seeks to encourage those who have contributed to the arts. This field is open to artists who work in a variety of media, such as performance, visual arts, digital art, film and literature. This award aims to recognise the sheer talent and creative inspiration of young people in our district.

Music Award
This award is aimed at encouraging the enormous musical talent we have in New Plymouth District. We wish to promote all young people who have enriched the music scene either by performance and/or song writing.

Cultural Development Award
This award seeks to recognise the talent and contributions  made by a young person or group toward enriching the wider culture within our district. The sharing of cultural values is vital to building a connected community, and helping to enhance and celebrate uniqueness of all people.

Environmental Award
This award recognises successful contributions made by young people that foster respect and affection for the environment. Examples of contributions include projects that positively promote the natural world, human environment or energy efficiency.

Sports Achievement Award
This award is aimed at recognising sports achievement. It could be in a leadership role in a team sport or from an individual pursuit where they have developed and succeeded. 

Employee of the Year Award
This award is aimed at those in paid employment. It seeks to recognise a young person who exemplifies a strong work ethic, loyalty and commitment in the workforce.

Young Entrepreneur Award
This award is aimed at recognising those young people who have a natural enterprising spirit and who are currently operating a business in the district.

Youth-Endorsed Space Award
This award is to reward a facility or organisation that provides and creates a genuine 'youth friendly' space and service to the young people in New Plymouth District.

Who is eligable for nomination?

  • Nominees must be aged between 12 and 24 years of age and live in the New Plymouth District.
  • Nominees must not have won a similar award at a national level or at this event before.
