eDay

eDay logo. eDay provides an annual opportunity for households and schools to dispose of their  obsolete computers, monitors, printers, scanners, faxes and cellphones. The service is free and provides for safe disposal.

The inaugural eDay in New Plymouth was held on Saturday 4 October 2008. All of the items delivered to the drop-off centre were either destined to be sorted for reuse (larger monitors only) or broken down and the reclaimed material (e.g. gold, copper, lead, and glass) recycled. The material recovery process is internationally certified and environmentally safe.

Approximately 80 volunteers helped to ensure the success of eDay 2008 in New Plymouth.

The final tally for eDay 2008 in New Plymouth was:

  • Monitors - 1079
  • PCs - 816
  • Printers, faxes, scanners - 624
  • Miscellaneous - 141
  • Cellphones - 130
  • Vehicles - 624

eDay 2008 in New Plymouth was organised by New Plymouth District Council with the help of the Taranaki Regional Council, Lamberts Business Systems and Computer Corner. Onsite logistics support and materials were provided by Hooker Pacific and Timpack Industries.

eDay is an annual event co-ordinated nationally by the Computer Access New Zealand Trust (CANZ)  and is one action that is included in the councils strategy to make New Plymouth District a more sustainable community. It is specifically for households and schools. Businesses are expected to make their own disposal arrangements with their suppliers.

Approximately 95 per cent of the materials in a computer or associated equipment can be recycled.
