Workplace Travel Plans

Travel plans help reduce car commuting and encourage the use of healthier and environmentally sustainable transport options. Walking and cycling mean less congestion, fewer harmful fumes and less stress. It is a way of incorporating exercise into your daily routine and can result in safer communities are it puts ‘eyes’ back on the streets.

Physical activity also enhances mental performance as you are more alert and stimulated after exercise – great for  staff productivity!

For businesses, limited car parking, high transport costs and triple bottom line reporting are just a few factors that many encourage the use of travel plans.Cycling to work along an urban cycle path. Photo: Nathaniel Benefield.

Businesses can look at ways of reducing car travel for staff, clients, customers and suppliers through:

  • Car pooling schemes.
  • Provision of cycle facilities.

  • Public transport concessions.
  • Flexible work practices – to reduce car park requirements.
  • Bike to Work Breakfast clubs.
  • Setting-up Bike User Groups (BUGs) for support.
  • Installing showers, lockers and changing rooms.
  • Providing secure parking for bikes.
  • Walking, cycling or car pooling incentives – discounts on walking shoes, free umbrellas, bike pumps, water bottles, discounted car parking etc.
