Walking in New Plymouth District

WALKING THE COASTAL WALKWAY FOR RECREATION

Walking along the Coastal Walkway.

Walking: A Great Activity For All Ages

Walking can help you keep active, make friends and explore the city. It’s safe, costs nothing (depending if you stop for a coffee or not!) and can be done almost anywhere at any time.

New Plymouth District has a number of fabulous walkways on offer including the Coastal Walkway, Barrett Domain Walkway, Te Henui Walkway and Huatoki Walkway, as well as tracks around Lakes Rotomanu and Mangamahoe.

  • Walkway information

Not only is walking fun and sociable, with the growth of higher density communities, increase in traffic congestion and environmental concerns, walking is becoming important long term sustainable transport option. We combine walking with almost every other method of getting around – getting to and from the bus stop, to complete a trip by car, or we walk the entire route to reach the destination.

Our Community Development Team have a map available with the accessible walking routes marked.

  • Contact us for a copy of the accessible walking routes map.

Hints for walkers

  • Find out the weather forecast and dress to the conditions (light, comfortable clothing in summer and warm, waterproof clothing in winter). For longer walks always carry extra clothing for unexpected changes in the weather.
  • Wear comfortable, well-fitting footwear suitable for walking.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Avoid walking alone in secluded areas.
  • Take some fluids to drink and sunblock in the summer.
  • Walk tall, being aware of good posture – shoulders back, chest open, chin up
  • Walk with company, especially if you lack motivation.
  • Start with short walks and gradually build up distance and pace until you’re able to do at least 30 minutes of fast walking everyday.
  • Remember to stretch!
