New Plymouth District: Perfect By Bike

Tracks, trails, roads or city streets, cycling is a great way to build exercise into your day. It’s good for the environment, it’s fast, convenient and it gets you from door to door – if it’s under 5km away chances are you’ll get their faster by bike!

Situated on the northern coastal side of Mt Taranaki, all routes heading inland ascend quickly while routes that run parallel to the coast traverse valleys and  watercourses – both providing great views of spectacular scenery as well as cycling routes for all levels.

The development of the Coastal Walkway has provided an opportunity for cycling beside the sea. Pathway extensions enable a commuter route into the city, a safe cycling route for children and a shared pathway for cyclists and walkers. Local roads offer scenic, recreational, sport and tourist routes with some designated cycle lanes.

But you don’t have to be a professional cyclist to ride around the district. Getting started is as simple as a road worthy bike, a helmet, comfy clothes and shoes!

Report broken glass or a crash

To ensure New Plymouth District is cycle friendly the council needs to know of hazards like broken glass.

Remember to include the address or a clear description of where the glass or debris is.

Information about crashes or near-misses enables the council and the Police to determine if there are particular areas that are accident prone and if changes need to be made to reduce the risk of accidents (e.g. signage, road surface etc).

All crashes, including near-misses, should be reported to the Police.

Cycle routes

There are around 40km of on-road and 15km of off-road cycle tracks through-out the district. A range of mountain bike tracks also exist.

For city routes the cycle network maps will help you plan the best, safest or most direct route. They also show what is planned for the district’s cycling infrastructure.

Off-road there’s an adventure at every turn! Check out some of the tracks and rides available in the district.

Future of cycling

The benefits of cycling are numerous. To name just a few cycling is:

• The most energy efficient mode of transport.
• Often faster than rush hour traffic.
• A way of combining transport and fitness goals.
• Significantly more cost effective than other transport options (except walking).
• A way to increase independence, especially for school-aged children.

The development of the Cycle Strategy shows the council’s commitment to making New Plymouth District cycle friendly. Through education, cycle promotions and the development of more cycle networks, a cycling culture for transport and recreation is hoped to be developed.
