Cycling: Getting Started

Although we see cyclists wearing bright coloured lycra and looking like professional athletes, the reality is that any road worthy bike, a cycle helmet, comfy clothes and shoes will do!

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Always wear a cycle helmet. Cycling along the Coastal Walkway. Photo: Nathaniel Benefield.
  • Wear comfortable clothing in summer and warm, waterproof clothing in winter (gloves are highly recommended!).
  • Make sure you have a good bike lock.
  • Gradually build up your cycling – plan your route and add an extra block on each time to increase your fitness and confidence.
  • Stick to quieter roads or the Coastal Walkway and pathways when you’re just starting out.
  • For longer rides have a puncture repair kit with you and learn how to change the tyre.
  • Wear fluorescent gear (vests, strips, belts and ankle bands) to be seen clearly.
  • Use a front light and rear reflectors when riding at night, dusk or dawn.
  • Remember to take plenty of fluids to drink and sunblock and sunglasses in the summer.
  • Include cycling in your daily habit – make it routine and become a role model for your friends and family.

What sort of bike you buy depends on what sort of cycling you intend to do – road riding, mountain biking, BMX, racing, leisure or commute cycling. Your local bike shop will be able to help you get the right fit and Bike NZ has a good introduction to choosing a bike.

Shared use – share the path

New Plymouth District has around 15km of off-road shared pathways for people to enjoy walking or cycling away from traffic. Here are some guidelines for sharing the path so everyone can safely use:

  • Watch for signs.
  • Leave room for others – if you are walking or cycling in pairs, try not to take up the entire track.
  • Give a warning when overtaking – ring your bell or call out a friendly greeting.
  • Keep left when you meet oncoming traffic.
  • Move off the track if you stop for a chat.
  • Be aware and courteous. Return to top

Sharing the road

Motorists and cyclist both have a right to use our roads and a right to safe and enjoyable travel. While both have a responsibility to understand each other’s needs, cyclists are the most vulnerable. Here are some tips for cyclists and motorists to make it a safe trip:

  • Motorists can feel delayed by cyclists – try and keep as far left as possible.
  • Cyclists need extra room at intersections and round-a-bouts.
  • Sometimes cyclists need to ride out from the kerb to avoid drains and debris – try and avoid moving out suddenly so motorists have time to see you.
  • Cyclists have the right to ride in the main traffic flow if parked cars block the left road side.
  • Cyclists need to respect the road rules (including red lights) to ensure safe travel – motorists won’t be looking for cyclists running red lights.
  • Cyclists can be fast movers – keep your eyes peeled, especially for cyclists turning right!
  • Like everyone else, cyclists can be dazzled by full beam headlights.
  • Cyclists are hard to see at night and in low light – make sure you wear fluoro gear and use lights.
