Heritage Scorecard

Where we are at

Notable trees protected
There are currently 462 entries in the Notable Tree Schedule of the District Plan. Entries comprise single specimens through to groups comprised of 70 plus trees.

Category A heritage buildings and items protected
There are currently 82 buildings classified as Category A in the District Plan. Eight of these buildings also have their interiors or parts thereof protected.

Archaeological and waahi tapu sites protected
There are 768 sites listed in the District Plan. Almost all of these are both archaeological sites and waahi tapu.

Heritage protection fund
We established a heritage protection fund in 1996. An annual allocation of $50,000 is made to the fund and unexpended monies are carried forward.

Owners of Category A heritage buildings and items, notable trees, significant natural areas (of indigenous vegetation) and waahi tapu can make applications to the council for funds to assist in the protection and maintenance of these resources.

Funds applied fot the protection/ maintenance of:

• Notable trees.
• Heritage buildings/items.
• Archaeological sites and waahi tapu sites.

Under current policy we allocate $50,000 per annum to the Heritage Assistance Maintenance Fund. The fund is open to applications from the owners of heritage buildings/items, notable trees, notable trees, archaeological sites and waahi tapu, significant natural areas and wetlands scheduled in the District Plan for the purposes of maintenance of heritage values.

Funding also supports heritage and colour scheme advice. Applications are sporadic.

There are several potential major applications in the wings. It is anticipated that our Earthquake Prone Building policy required under the Building Act will also have an impact as many of the at risk buildings are heritage buildings and the fund may come under pressure in the short to medium term (one - three years).

The following graph depicts the history of the fund showing the number of applications and funds approved annually since its inception:

Since 1996, 73 applications for heritage protection assistance have been approved for a total $550,689. The average grant made is approximately $7,540. The majority of approvals relate to building maintenance, but significant assistance has also been granted for the fencing and covenanting of significant natural areas and also the fencing of waahi tapu.
