Our Sustainable Future

New Plymouth District is renown for its scenery and outdoor activities, and we are committed to ensuring the natural resources remain available for generations to come.

The Council is a partner in the International Council for Local Environmental Initiative (ICLEI), and specifically a participant in the ICLEI Climate Protection Programme (CCP). The CCP focuses on enabling and supporting local governments to develop programs to work with their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We adopted the following greenhouse gas reduction targets in July 2008:

Corporate
Stabilise at 2006 levels by 30 June 2010 and then reduce emissions by 20 per cent by 30 June 2015.

Community
Stabilise at 2001 levels by 30 June 2011 and then reduce emissions by 20 per cent by 30 June 2021.

Communities for Climate Protection

Communities for Climate Protection - New Zealand logo. As part of the Communities for Climate Protection - New Zealand programme (CCP-NZ) we aim to reduce the amount of green house gases produced in the district. The collection, monitoring and analysis of key data in relation to the economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing of the district will assist us to manage the district in a sustainable manner.

CCP-NZ encourages and supports councils to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and develop actions to foster climate change action at a local level.  There are nearly 700 units of local government participating in the CCP programme around the world, including 27 New Zealand local authorities.

We joined the CCP-NZ programme in March 2007 and are committed to completing the five milestones of the programme:

Milestone 1: Conduct an inventory and forecast for Community and Corporate (Council) greenhouse gas emissions.
Milestone 2:  Establish greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.
Milestone 3:  Develop and adopt a local action plan.
Milestone 4: Implement the local action plan and quantify the benefits of implementing actions.
Milestone 5: Monitor and report on implementation of the local action plan and progress towards achieving the reduction goal.

  • Milestone 1 report August 2007 (Eight pages 88KB PDF)
  • Milestone 2 report June 2008 (13 pages 174KB PDF)

Scorecards and indicators showing how we are doing will be on the site by mid-2009.
