Urenui Sea Wall Project

Work has begun on the construction of an additional 100m of rock wall along Urenui Beach to help prevent further erosion of the beach. The wall starts from the end of the existing wall in front of the campground.

The wall will be similar to other walls built along the coastal pathway. As a large rock seawall it will offer protection from coastal erosion along this section of the beach. Urenui beach front before the sea wall is constructed.

Safety notice: People should note the trucks will be going through the Urenui holiday camp anti-clockwise – against the usual flow of traffic – so they drive along the sealed section of road when they’re empty. Please take care in this area.

Timeline

April 2008: Tenders called. Urenui beach front before the construction of the sea wall.
May 2008: Steve Fleming (contractor) appointed.
May - August 2008: Construction of the seawall on hold due to ground water problems.
September/October 2008: Construction of the seawall recommenced.
December 2008: Seawall complete.
