Peringa Park Wetland

Over the summer we will be working in Peringa Park, Fitzroy creating a wetland.

The wetland will perform an important environmental role in the health of Lake Rotomanu, as stormwater from Fitzroy will be directed into the wetland for cleaning before it reaches the lake.

Wetlands are natural filters. They take in dirty stormwater run-off water with all its sediments and contaminants (such as heavy metals and bacterial contaminants), trap those in its soil and plants, and then cleaned water flows out the other side – in this case, into Lake Rotomanu.

Timeline

October 2008 - March 2009: Excavation and construction of the wetland. This includes the removal of pine trees and the development of paths and boardwalks.

April - July 2009: Planting.

Note: Walkways through this area of Peringa Park will be closed during the removal of the pine trees, and the lake’s road will be reduced to one lane when nearby trees are felled.
