Huatoki Stream Development

The construction of a new public area along the Huatoki Stream between Devon and Ariki streets in New Plymouth’s CBD started in June this year and is scheduled to be completed by Christmas.

Huatoki Stream development design concepts. The design features, which were determined following public feedback on earlier concepts, include room for public events such as market days, and accessible ramps and terrace seating leading down to a small amphitheatre deck alongside the Huatoki Stream.

A high, large canopy with bubble skylights will create a gateway to the public space from Devon St, with eye-catching feature lighting drawing pedestrians through the area and trees installed for their shade.

A few modifications have been made to the design since it was confirmed in August last year.

Huatoki Stream development design concepts. The construction of a retractable weir on the stream’s bed has been deferred, and the Devon St canopy has been modified so that it no longer overhangs the road. A boardwalk between Huatoki Lane and Ariki St on the west bank has been replaced with paved access on the east bank, which is of simpler construction and gives better access to the sun and stream views.

Contractor: Whitaker Civil Construction Ltd.
Costs: The $1.676 million construction contract cost was included in the Community Plan 2006-2016, while the final design was shaped by public feedback received on early concept drawings.
