Coastal Walkway Extension

The Coastal Walkway extension will add about 4km of pathway, including a 70m shared cycle/pedestrian bridge over the Waiwhakaiho river mouth, to extend the walkway to Ellesmere Ave in Bell Block. The extension will provide an alternative route for cycling and walking between Bell Block and the city centre and beyond.

It is estimated the project will cost $3.1 million with LTNZ contributing $1.88m or 61 per cent of the cost, and the council meeting the rest.

The project will include sealing the existing Coastal Walkway across the dunes between the Waiwhakaiho River mouth and Fitzroy Motor Camp to make this section fully accessible to all cyclists and pedestrians.

The shared cycle/pedestrian bridge features a single arch, evocative of a breaking wave, that spans the bridge diagonally and will frame Mt Taranaki at one end.

The Coastal Walkway currently extends 7km between Port Taranaki and the mouth of the Waiwhakaiho River connecting popular recreational features, residential areas and the CBD to the sea.

Work on the Coastal Walkway began in 1999.
