Coastal Walkway Extension

The Coastal Walkway extension will add about 3km of pathway, including an 80m shared cycle/pedestrian bridge over the Waiwhakaiho river mouth, to extend the walkway to Ellesmere Avenue in Bell Block. The extension will provide an alternative route for cycling and walking between Bell Block and the city centre and beyond.

The project will include creating a concrete path with a timber boardwalk along the existing Coastal Walkway between Fitzroy Motor Camp and the Waiwhakaiho River mouth and a sealed path to Ellesmere Avenue.

The shared cycle/pedestrian bridge features a single arch, evocative of a breaking wave, that spans the bridge diagonally framing Mount Taranaki at one end.

It is estimated the project will cost $4.2 million with LTNZ contributing $1.88m, and the Council meeting the rest.

The Coastal Walkway currently extends 7km between Port Taranaki and the mouth of the Waiwhakaiho River connecting popular recreational features, residential areas and the CBD to the sea.

Work on the Coastal Walkway began in 1999.

Te Rewa Rewa Bridge Opening

The shared pedestrian/cycle Te Rewa Rewa Bridge opened on Saturday 5 June, spanning the Waiwhakaiho River between the Rotomanu Lake road and Te Rewa Rewa Reserve.

The opening took place almost three years to the day since the signing of the Rewa Rewa Agreement between NPDC and Ngati Tawhirikura hapu on 6 June 2007, which made possible the Coastal Walkway extension northward.

The bridge is reminiscent of a breaking wave or a whale skeleton. It was designed and built by a consortium led by local company Whitaker Civil Engineering Limited, and including Novare Design, CPG and Fitzroy Engineering.
