History

In 1876 our fore fathers had the vision to set aside and develop an area that was really unkempt rubbish-land in those early days (a timeless steep sided valley).

By 1890 the water lilies in the Hatchery pond were spectacular and look what we have today.

The Tea House was built in 1931 and served the public of Taranaki and indeed New Zealand until 2005 when due to her age a major restoration was needed. This was completed in December 2006 in a style that has seen the ‘grand old lady’ keep her exterior intact and the interior warm and welcoming.
