Treasured Relationships 2007

JOSHUA AND HOPPIE

One of the Treasured Relationship winners, Joshua Hopkins and his Grandad Hoppie.

International Day of Older Persons

To mark International Day of Older Persons 2007, New Plymouth District Council held a competition for all ages asking New Plymouth residents to tell us “how much you love an older person in your life".

Ten lucky entrants won a unique photographic portrait of themselves with that special older person by photographer Mike Scott (finalist in the portrait portfolio section of the Qantas Media Awards 2007).

Winning entries

Sam Boon
Sam Boon and his Grandpa Terry. My Grandpa is a really kind loving person who laughs at everything. My Grandpa knows lots of important people like Michael Smither and Peter Tennent. Some of these people I’ve met. Grandpa is a really good skier. Grandpa got Mum, Dad, and even me a life pass each. Usually we would have to get a season pass. We go skiing on Mt Ruapehu on the Turoa side. I love my Grandpa’s car. Its got 22 inch rims, biose speakers, TV, pitch black tint, V10, 463 hours power, solar panels, 3-50G subs and a black leather interior.
I love my Grandpa.

Kazarra Castle
Kazarra Castle and her Grandmother Shirley. My treasured relationship is with my Grandmother (Shirley). We have a treasured relationship because I know that if I need to talk to someone about anything she is always there. We are very close and I always see her. Every holidays that I go to stay with her she teaches me how to bake, she also mends my school uniform when it falls apart and fixes my clothes that have ripped. She also is very good at playing the piano and has taught me to play as well. My Nana is extremely supportive of whatever I want to do or try. Every Saturday, whether it is raining or sunny she comes down to the netball courts to cheer me and my team on.

Alicja Dodunski
Alicja Dodunski and her Nana Phyllis. My Nana is so special to me. Every time I think of her I get warm fluffy feelings from my childhood. She made us the yummiest food, from the banana cake to her crunchy roasts. She is the most selfless person I know. I’m so proud of her. I wish everyone had a Nana like mine. She makes my world so completely beautiful!

Shiloh Evans
Shiloh Evans and her Nana Nancy. Next to Mum and Dad, Nana is THE most special person in my life. I wish you could meet her because then you would know how hard it is for me to even try to describe her because all the adjectives you could think of like thoughtful, caring, loving, unselfish are not nearly enough to describe this wonderful Nana. She is always putting everybody else’s needs before her own, like always being there for Dad and I (after Mum and Dad separated). She has been like a second Mum to me. She is always doing so much for me. If my Nana was to get a picture of her and I, I’m sure she would almost cry. She is always doing so much for me. It would be really nice to give her something in return.

Rylee Fraser
Rylee Fraser and her Grandad Jeff. I think my Grandad is the most loving, caring, kind and extremely helpful Grandad in the world. My Grandad enjoys going to the beach with me… we love to run up and down the sand dunes together. Sometimes I fall over and he calls “come on” to me. Grandad helps me to get better in netball by practicing ‘catches’ with me. Grandad also helps me to be a better person too by encouraging me to do my best. When I do something well he says “good shot dear” and it makes me feel happy inside. When my Grandad cuddles me, I feel warm and very loved… and VERY LOVED is what I am!

Joshua Hopkins
Joshua Hopkins and his Grandad Hoppie. I love my Grandad he lets me sit on his knee. I get rides on his wheelchair.

Jacob Manning

Jaccob Manning and his Grandad Ted. Every Friday Grandad goes dancing. Hopefully he doesn’t make a fool of himself on the dance floor.  But who knows he might just rule the night. My favourite time spent with my grandad is when we go tramping in the Pouakais or Paritutu.  When I walk up with him I can hear him laughing away in front of me.  My grandad may have his faults but no one else in the world has a grandad as special as mine.

Shaughny Murphy
Shaughny Murphy and her step mum Stacey. Treasured relationships - Stacey is this person’s name. She is my step mum and I love her. She had a good career, job, hobbies and sport. She left it all so she was able to take care of me. If (Mum) Stacey didn’t I would have got put into a CYFS family where I wouldn’t have known anyone and wouldn’t have been shown as much love as I do now. I love my mummy Stacey so much, because she has accepted me into her life. Mummy Stacey I love so very much, she is one of the greatest people I have ever met, she loves me with all her heart. She makes me feel very special and treats me like I have been hers forever.

Briana and Graydon Sullivan
Briana and Graydon Sullivan with their grandparents. I love my Grandad. I’ve got a special name that I call him, it is DanDan. Me and my Grandad do lots of stuff together. We have fixed a motorbike, made a mini bike and started on a midget.  We make lots of other stuff in his garage. Graydon

My Grandads name is Barry. He lives four houses down the road from us. When Mum is at work Grandad looks after me and my brother Graydon. Grandad has looked after me ever since I was four months old. When Grandad looks after me at my house we turn music up really loud and dance around and Grandad doesn’t mind a bit.  My Grandad is really cool and I love him very much.   Briana

Sydnee Teka
Sydnee Tika and her Poppa Gary. My Poppa, well he makes us laugh all the time especially when he pulls out his false teeth. I think I know why Poppa has false teeth because he is always eating lollies and peanuts. When we visit Poppa he is normally in his garage playing his rock n roll which Cheyanne and Tylia enjoy dancing to, or he is busy in the garden enjoying a beer or two or three or four. His garden really is his pride and joy. We love you dearly, thanks for being our cool Poppa!
