Positive Ageing

Community Development Plan

The Community Development Team has made a 10-year commitment, through the Community Development Plan, to support the needs of older people in the district.

To achieve this our Community Development Adviser works with and supports older people in the district. The information below outlines some of the ways in which we support our older residents.

The Positive Ageing Group

Positive Ageing Policy

The Community Development Team coordinates the Positive Ageing Group which meets monthly. This group works closely with agencies, organisations and the community to create a district where older people are able to live positive lives. The group does this by responding to the needs identified in the our Positive Ageing Policy.

Members are from the main older persons' organisations such as Grey Power and Age Concern, as well as key agencies such as the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT), Work and Income and Sport Taranaki.

The National Positive Ageing Strategy

The National Positive Ageing Strategy

Our Positive Ageing Policy was developed to link with the national positive ageing strategy. Each year a national action plan is developed by the Office for Senior Citizens to achieve the goals of this strategy.

As well as this, our Community Development Team works with the Office for Senior Citizens to develop a set of local projects to form part of the national action plan.

The following projects are part of the action plan:

  • Hold 11 Positive Ageing Trust and Group meetings to consider positive ageing issues.
  • Hold at least four public seminars on issues related to positive ageing.
  • Review, update and distribute to key stakeholders the five-year positive ageing policy to define and promote positive ageing in the district.
  • Through the Positive Ageing Centre of Excellence, run a seminar series on issues related to retirement.
  • Organise a programme of events for older people on 1 October (International Day of the Older Person).
  • Continue to work in partnership with ACC to inform tenants of the council's Housing for the Elderly units about falls prevention.
