Community Funding

Groups living in New Plymouth District are eligible to apply for funding from the following schemes.

Community funding partnerships

Groups that operate as an incorporated society or charitable trust can apply for money to support projects that will positively impact on one of the following outcomes:

  • Connected - infrastructure and transport.
  • Prosperous - economy, employment and tourism.
  • Secure and Healthy - community safety and health.
  • Skilled - training and education.
  • Sustainable - environment.
  • Together - community.
  • Vibrant - culture, leisure and recreation.

Applications for the 2008 round of funding opens 23 June and closes 31 July 2008. 

Creative Communities

This fund is aimed at supporting activities that will increase participation in the arts. Funding is allocated twice each year. Both individuals and groups are eligible to apply.

  • Round Two 2007/08 opens 4 February and closes 7 March 2008.
  • Round One 2008/09 opens 4 August and closes 5 September 2008.

Iwi/hapu/marae purchase of professional services

The purpose of this fund is to enable iwi, hapu and marae organisations to purchase a range of professional services to facilitate their participation in resource consent applications and matters relating to the preparation and changes to the District Plan.

Applications are invited throughout the year and are considered by the council's Assistant Chief Executive and Iwi Relationships Manager every three weeks.

Marae grants

Marae in New Plymouth District can apply for funding for the following (in order of priority):

  • Insurance.
  • External works (protection of the fabric of the building ensuring it is structurally sound and watertight).
  • Health and safety (work that ensures the building is safe and secure for all using it and includes areas such as electricity work, faulty floor boards, plumbing and lighting).
  • Hygiene (matters related primarily to drainage, kitchens, bathrooms and toilet areas). 
  • Interior structure (walls, ceilings, and the internal structures not already covered by the areas above). 
  • Aesthetic and capital projects (this criteria allows for new desirable objects).

Grants are allocated on an annual basis. To be eligible for this assistance, marae must be an incorporated society or trust, and forward with their application a copy of the previous year's audited annual accounts.

The application form for 2008/2009 is now available for marae to start working through. However, applications will only be accepted between 3 June 2008 and 31 July 2008.

Social services grant

Not-for-profit social service organisations that operate as incorporated societies can apply for up to $5,000 to cover ongoing costs. A social service is defined as an organised activity which provides benefit to a client's welfare and quality of life, or seeks to improve the condition of disadvantaged people in the community. 

Applications open Monday 22 September and close 31 October 2008. Late applications cannot be accepted.

Heritage Protection Fund

This fund can assist with the presentation and protection of any item identified in the heritage schedule of the District Plan. It may also apply to items that are not listed in the District Plan if they meet the council's criteria for significance.

Applications are invited throughout the year and are considered by the council's Monitoring Committee every six weeks.

Rural halls

Funding is available for capital improvements and preventative maintenance works on a priority-needs basis. Insurance premiums may be assisted on a hall floor size basis.  You don't need to use an application form to apply - just write a letter to the council outlining your request and associated costs.

To be eligible for funding, applicants must have hall committees that are an incorporated society or trust, and they must forward with their application a copy of the previous year's audited accounts.

Applications close every year during August. Applications for 2008 close on 22 August. Late applications cannot be accepted.

Rural domain funding scheme

The purpose of this scheme is to assist with the maintenance and operation costs of the following council owned and/or administered rural domains: Okato, Upper Mangorei, Urenui Comunity, Tarata, Uruti, Pukeho, Tariki, Huirangi, Okoki and Purangi.  Funds can be granted for one-off projects and general operations.

To be eligible for assistance the domain liaison committees are required to forward a copy of their previous year's annual accounts with the application.

Each year during August/September, letters seeking applications are sent to the various committees. The applications are then considered and a programme is finalised. The process is usually completed by mid-September.
