Taranaki Arts Community Trust

In July 2003 the Community Development Team launched the Taranaki Arts Community Trust (TACT). Supported by us, TACT is a dedicated community arts trust that develops partnerships and initiatives to advance local artists.

Community Arts Strategy

The Community Arts Strategy outlines the vision and goals that TACT is working towards.

The Real TArt Gallery

The Real TArt Gallery (TArt standing for Taranaki Art) is run by TACT. It is a community art gallery that operates with a philosophy of supporting all artists to show their work. As a result it charges only a 20 per cent commission and operates very low hanging fees.

One of the main aims of the gallery is to enhance the economic viability of local artists. In its first six months of operation it returned more than $55,000 to local artists through the sale of their work.

The gallery employs a full-time manager and a part-time administrator and supports all artists.

The gallery is on Egmont St in the heart of New Plymouth's central business district and within easy walking distance of both the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Puke Ariki.

Sunday Art MarketSunday art market

TACT runs a weekly Sunday art market that features stalls selling high-quality Taranaki crafted artworks. The market runs from 10am to 3pm every Sunday and is held outside Puke Ariki's South Wing (nearest the mountain).

The aim of the market is to offer another avenue for artists to gain exposure and become more financially stable. Both the market and gallery also offer visitors and residents easy access to some of the best artwork in the area.

Future developments

TACT is currently working on other major projects. These include:

  • An arts passport for visitors and residents. This will include information about all major galleries, studios and arts-related attractions in the area.
  • A dedicated website to add another element to the growing profile of local artists.
