About community development

The Community Development Team is dedicated to increasing the strength and effectiveness of community life.

This is achieved through improving local conditions and enabling people to participate in public decision making, so that they can achieve greater long term control over their circumstances.

Also, the team administers community funding and several grant schemes that are funded by the council or external organisations.

Services

The team has community development advisers who work with community groups, organisations and individuals. Their role is to provide advice, facilitation and training. The aim is to give groups the skills necessary to deliver the best possible outcomes for the New Plymouth District community.

Services include:

  • Advice, support and facilitation for community groups.
  • The Percolator community newsletter.
  • Annual publication of a community directory.
  • Provision of the social services directory on an annual basis.
  • Quarterly forums on subjects of interest, including disabilities and positive ageing.
  • Meeting facilities for non-profit organisations.
  • Support for community events and functions - such as Waitangi Day, Citizens' Awards, Volunteers' Awards and Youth Week.
  • Support and facilitation of the New Plymouth District Youth Subcommittee.
  • Support for the New Plymouth Volunteer Centre and Settlement Support New Plymouth – both located within the community development building.
  • Graffiti removal programme.
  • Best Kept New Plymouth District competition.
  • Community Housing.
