Future Taranaki

Future Taranaki is a strategic partnership of private, public and voluntary sector organisations across the region, all working together for the achievement of the community’s seven outcomes: Connected, Prosperous, Secure and Healthy, Skilled, Sustainable, Together and Vibrant.

This is the first in a series of reports that seeks to identify Taranaki’s progress towards the achievement of the outcomes, as identified by the people of the region.

Under the Local Government Act 2002, local authorities are required to carry out, not less than once every three years, a process to identify community outcomes for the intermediate and long-term future of its district or region, which as defined by the Local Government Act 2002 will:

  • Provide opportunities for communities to discuss their desired outcomes in terms of the present and future, social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of the community;
  • Allow communities to discuss the relative importance and priorities of identified outcomes;
  • Provide scope to measure progress towards the achievement community outcomes; and
  • Promote the better co-ordination and application of community resources;
  • Inform and guide the setting of priorities in relation to the activities of the local authority and other organisations.

All four local authorities in Taranaki – the New Plymouth, Stratford and South Taranaki District Councils and the Taranaki Regional Council – agreed that there should be one process for all local authorities in the region, and in 2004, Taranaki undertook a collaborative process to identify the community outcomes. The process included the community, iwi groups, local and central government, core service providers and key local industries.

Care was taken to ensure that the outcomes did not represent the sole interests of any one key group.
