Recycling Initiative Recruits Rugby Fans

Tue 27 Jul 2010

Rugby fans at Taranaki’s opening ITM Cup match this Thursday will be taking part in a comprehensive waste management initiative.

The initiative began very successfully at the All Blacks test match at Yarrow Stadium in June, and will be a permanent fixture at the stadium in the lead-up to New Plymouth’s three Rugby World Cup 2011 matches.

“Part of RWC 2011’s programme is to maximise environmental sustainability so we want people to get into the habit of our Team Clean approach before the world cup games start,” says Manager Venues and Rugby World Cup Jenny Mills.

“It’s dead easy. You can help keep our venue tidy by using the recycling stations on-site or taking your rubbish home with you, because ‘it’s sweet to be neat’.

“In planning for the All Blacks game we had an objective of 60 per cent of waste diverted from the landfill, so were delighted with the end result of 76 per cent of the 8,240kg of waste being recycled.

“However, we can always improve on that total of recyclables!”

The Team Clean initiative starts with the food and drink vendors who minimise their use of packaging, and continues with the recycling stations manned to help people use the bins.

This initiative will be in place at all major events in New Plymouth District Council venues.

  • This Thursday’s match against Northland starts at 7.35pm.
