Local Firms Scoop Arts Sponsorship Awards

Thu 31 Jul 2008

Taranaki firms last night (Wednesday) took out two of the four premier awards at the National Business Review Awards for Sponsorship of the Arts

Shell won the Best Regional Sponsorship Award for its support of the 60 Springs education programme at Puke Ariki, and Govett Quilliam The Lawyers won the NBR Online Award for its backing of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery’s Monica Brewster Evening.

Mayor Peter Tennent says both companies deserve the accolades.

“Both Shell and Govett Quilliam have long histories in Taranaki and are part of the fabric of this region, and through their support two iconic institutions are able to develop unique services that benefit the local community,” says Mayor Pete.

“The public is able to access some innovative and inspirational programmes through Puke Ariki and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery because of the support given by Shell and Govett Quilliam.

“These two firms are representative of the strong spirit of social investment in this region – we have a huge number of individuals and companies all working together to make this great place even better!”

At the awards evening was Prime Minister Helen Clark, who told those assembled: “Taranaki deserves special mention for being not only the home of the exceptional Puke Ariki but also of the Govett-Brewster – the finest contemporary art gallery in the country.”

The NBR awards acknowledge partnerships between business and the arts that demonstrate a high level of creativity, commitment and vision, as well as important business benefits.

Shell NZ Country Chairman Rob Jager says Shell is delighted to have received this award in partnership with Puke Ariki.

“As one of its first partners, our thanks go out to all the community who have contributed to the success of Puke Ariki over the last eight years,” he says.

“Shell has been a proud and active member of the Taranaki community for more than 50 years, and is committed to integrating creative technology, environmental and social considerations within our business decisions.”

GQ Senior Partner John Eagles says contributing to the community is an important part of Govett Quilliam The Lawyers’ philosophy.

“To achieve national recognition of our long-term relationship with the council and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is hugely satisfying,” he says.

“It proves yet again that New Plymouth and Taranaki punch well above their weight on the national scene.”
