District Awaits International Awards Verdict

Mon 10 Nov 2008

New Plymouth District discovers tomorrow whether it has beaten off competition from four continents to claim a coveted prize in the International Awards for Liveable Communities.

As the sole New Zealand representative, New Plymouth is competing in the awards’ ‘Whole City’ and ‘Sustainable Projects’ categories.

Victory would be a double-whammy for New Plymouth, coming less than a month after being named NZ’s best place to live by North & South magazine.

“We’re up against some fantastic towns and cities from Europe, Asia, North America and Africa,” says Mayor Peter Tennent, one of a three-strong New Plymouth District Council team who gave presentations on Friday and Saturday at the China-based awards.

“Our presentations have gone well and we think we’ve done a good job to impress the judges. Now it’s simply a case of keeping our fingers crossed that they’ll recognise what an amazing place New Plymouth is!”

The team in Dongguan, China - comprising the Mayor plus the council’s Chief Executive Barbara McKerrow and General Manager Community Assets Anthony Wilson - has presented to the judging panel on the district in general (Whole City category) and the Coastal Walkway (Sustainable Projects).

Both presentations will also be judged for awards in each of the following criteria - enhancement of the landscape, heritage management, use of environmentally sensitive practices, community involvement, healthy lifestyles and planning for the future.

Results are expected to come through at about 3am Tuesday, NZ time.
