Chip Seal Repairs Coming for Carrington St

The stripping of new chip seal on New Plymouth’s Carrington St will be corrected when the temperature gets warmer.

Investigations by the contractor who sealed the road in March, Ireland Roading, have found that while the method of application was considered appropriate, the very heavy rain that followed shortly after helped cause significant damage to the new surface.

“The contractor believes that the torrential rain that arrived shortly after this sealing was completed caused a hydraulic action between the car tyres and the newly sealed road surface, which caused the chips to dislodge,” says NPDC Manager Roading Assets Max Aves.

“He’s been in the business for more than 30 years and says he hasn’t seen anything like this before on sealing contracts that he has executed.”

The damaged sections of the road will be resealed early next summer, when the temperatures are suitable. The cost of the remedial works will be borne by the contractor as it falls within the contract’s 12-month defects liability period.
