Change in Schedule for Mangorei Rd Project

Tue 22 Apr 2008

The major project to rebuild and resurface part of Mangorei Rd has been changed to include a longer stretch of the road this year.

So far the section of Mangorei Rd from Cumberland to Kauri streets has been rebuilt and surfaced with chip seal. Now the council has reworked the schedule to enable work to begin on the section from Kauri to Karaka streets in late April/early May.

“The original plan was to rebuild, chip seal then hotmix the Cumberland-Kauri section of Mangorei Rd this year,” says Manager Roading Assets Max Aves.

“Instead we’re going to delay the hotmixing until January or February next year, when the weather is more suitable, and use the money we were going to spend on it this year to instead rehabilitate the next section of Mangorei Rd down to Karaka St.

“That will see this second section finished to the same standard that the first section is now at, and both sections will be hotmixed in one go this summer.”

The rebuilding and chip sealing of the Kauri to Karaka section will be completed in June.

A third section of Mangorei Rd, from Karaka to Union streets, is also included in this staged project. Subject to the approval of the necessary budgets, this third section will be completed during the 2008/09 financial year.

The council has a long term objective to put a hotmix surface on all of the city’s arterial routes. This project to rebuild a long section of Mangorei Rd will resolve problems with subsidence and surface faults resulting from a very deep stormwater trench beneath the road, and also strengthen the pavement so that it is strong enough to take hotmix.
