Budget 08/09 Confirmed

Thu 26 Jun 2008

New Plymouth District Council’s budget and activities for 2008/09 have been confirmed, with the finalisation tonight (Thursday) of Budget 08/09.

Mayor Peter Tennent says the coming 12 months will see progress made on some major public projects, including the construction of a shared pedestrian/cycle bridge over the Waiwhakaiho River and development of a public space alongside Huatoki Stream in central New Plymouth.

“We will also be putting a lot of work into our basic infrastructure, such as extending the areas supplied with reticulated water, and maintaining the chip seal on urban and rural roads,” he says.

“2008/09 is about continuing the vibrancy and success that we as a district have developed over recent years, and we’ll be doing that by getting the basics right as well as the high-profile elements such as the coming All Blacks test match and the Davis Cup tennis tie.”

In the coming 12 months NPDC will spend the following to renew existing infrastructure (which is funded from depreciation – money set aside every year to renew existing assets): $2.2 million on stormwater, $1.4m on water, $5.4m on sewerage, $7.5m on roads, and $1.7m on parks.

For improvements to services (which are funded by raising new debt), NPDC will spend: $2m on stormwater, $0.4m on solid waste, $3.7m on water, more than $22m on sewerage, $6.6m on roads and $5.2m on parks.

Smaller amounts of money for renewals and improvements have been earmarked for solid waste, the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant’s laboratory, property, recreation and events, cultural services and regulatory services.
