About RSS Feeds

RSS feed icon. Real Simple Syndication (RSS) is a free and easy way for you to keep up to date with what’s new on our website. Through news feeds straight to your computer, RSS lets you know when we have changed or added new content to the following sections of our website:

  • Consultations.
  • Current Vacancies.
  • Events Calendar.
  • Major Events.
  • Maintenance Schedules.
  • News Releases.
  • Projects.

How do I subscribe to RSS feeds?

First you need an RSS reader (also called a feed aggregator or a news reader). This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read the items that interest you.

There are two types of RSS readers:

Online versions
These are websites that allow you to log in and view the RSS feeds you have subscribed to from any computer.

Computer desktop (download) versions
These are available through your internet browser or the programme you use to read and send email. Usually you have to download these to your computer before you begin. They gather RSS feed information and bring it directly to your computer.

Some of the more common online readers are:

  • Bloglines.
  • My Yahoo!
  • Google Reader.
  • Rojo.
  • Newsgator (Web-based package).

Some of the more common download readers:

  • Newsgator (software-based package).
  • FeedReader.
  • FeedDemon.
  • RSSBandit.
  • NewzCrawler.
  • NetNewsWire.

Now you have your RSS reader you can choose what information you would like to receive updates on. There are two ways to subscribe to RSS feeds:

Option 1 (for users with Firefox 1.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0 and above)
Click on the RSS icon of the page that you’d like to subscribe to from the list below. The feed will be automatically added to your reader.

Option 2 (for all other users)
Copy and paste the RSS url (e.g. newplymouthnz.com/RSS/Consultations.xml) of the page you’d like to subscribe to into your RSS reader. Your reader will tell you how to save it.

You are now set up to receive updates when we change or add to that section on our website!
