Water Supply

New Plymouth Water Treatment Plant | Inglewood Water Treatment Plant | Oakura Water Treatment Plant | Okato Water Treatment Plant | Water Standards

In its natural state, raw water is not suitable for immediate use because it can contain organic material and pathogens (disease-causing organisms) which affect its quality and suitability for public consumption. Therefore several treatment processes are needed to ensure that it meets internationally accepted standards.

Nine lines of defence

Water coming out of a tap. To bring you a sterile product free of harmful organisms we maintain nine separate lines of defence at the treatment plant and then through the reticulation:

Treatment plant

  • Coagulation/flocculation.
  • Settling (clarification).
  • Filtration.
  • Post-disinfection.
  • Health checks – for both operational plant staff and contractors. The Water Treatment Plant.

Reticulation

  • Residual disinfection.
  • Water storage integrity.
  • Microbiological testing.
  • Backflow prevention.

Get connected

The Water Treatment Plant. For new rural, coastal and commercial users you need to complete a water connection/disconnection form to get your water connected.

  • Water connection/disconnection form (Six pages 549KB PDF)
  • Sewer/stormwater/water fees and charges (Two pages 39KB PDF)

A rural water connection is only available on a restricted flow (one cubic metre or 1000 litres per day minimum).

Disconnections
You will need to complete a water application/disconnection form (above) to get your water disconnected. For temporary disconnection get your plumber to disconnect the service on your side of the toby or manifold box.

Water treatment

We operate four water treatment plants to ensure water to the district is clean, pure and safe to drink.

New Plymouth Water Treatment Plant
The New Plymouth Water Treatment Plant draws surface water from two sources – the Waiwhakaiho River and Lake Mangamahoe – and processes it through a gravity-fed plant and piping system to more than 26,000 homes and businesses in the district.

Inglewood Water Treatment Plant

Oakura Water Treatment Plant
The Oakura Water Treatment Plant was converted to bore water supply and commissioned in April 2004. Supplying water to 1,500 people, a bore supply ensures consistent quality and security of water, especially during times of volcanic activity or earthquakes in North Taranaki.
