Vogeltown Area Water Main Renewal

The water mains in the lower Vogeltown area are being replaced. The water mains currently servicing this area were all built between 1909 and 1914 and although they have provided good service they have exceeded their design life and are in need of replacement. As a result of the upgrade, water supply will become more reliable with less water lost through leaks and other maintenance issues.

The project is broken into two separate contracts. The first contract is for the construction of the water mains themselves while the second contract is for the connection of the new water mains to the existing live water mains. Residential supplies will be switched over to new water mains during the second contract.

The water main construction contract will be broken down into three separate stages.

Stage one (blue): Norman Street, Holsworthy Street, Victoria Street, George Street, and Carrington Street (between Pendarves Street and Mill Road).
Stage two (green): Carrington Street.
Stage three (pink): Ballance Street, Selwyn Street, Struan Avenue.

Map of Vogeltown area.

What: A new PVC water main will be laid. The majority of the new mains will have a nominal bore of 150mm but Norman Street, Struan Avenue and Selwyn Street west of Ballance Street will be 100mm in diameter.

When: Work began to lay the new watermains on 2 March and is scheduled to take 22 weeks. The live connections contract will take approximately two months and are expected to begin after Stage Two of the watermains contract is complete. Both of these time periods are subject to weather and other delays.

Who: Whitaker Civil Engineering Ltd won the first contract and will supply, install and commission the water mains. Two crews will be working independently to lay the water mains on two fronts. The live connections contract will be put out to tender during the first contract.

Why: The current water mains supplying this area were built between 1909 and 1914. Although they have provided good service for the majority of the previous 100 years they have exceeded their design life and are in need of replacement. Water supply will become more reliable with less water lost through leaks and other maintenance issues.

Frequently asked questions

Will access to my house be affected?

While there may be some disruption and minor delays on the streets that are currently being worked on, access to private property will be maintained at all times.

Will there still be parking available?

Parking in the immediate vicinity of the works will be limited but this will not extend greater than 100m. Once the watermain has been laid the works will move on making parking available once more.

What of is the total cost of this project?

Approximately $900,000.

How deep are the trenches?

The pipe will be laid approximately 1m below the ground level.

What benefits will the project have it?

The existing pipes have far exceeded their design life and are in need of replacement. The new pipes will be significantly more reliable and will result in lower maintenance costs with less water lost.

How long will the road remain unsealed?

Once work has been completed on each road it is planned to reseal the trench on that road. For longer roads, such as Carrington Street and Ballance Street, it is planned to carry-out more than one resealing section.
