History

The Star Gym was opened in March 1957 as a memorial to the members of the Star Football Club and Spotswood United Club who served and fell in World War II. The clubs raised half the money for the building of the gymnasium and members donated their time to build the facility. The Council became involved so that grants for war memorial funding could be given. A condition of this funding was that the New Plymouth City Council own the land and the gymnasium.

The two rugby clubs merged in the late 1980s. The hall is managed by a joint committee (Star Gym Control Committee) comprising of Council officers and rugby club representatives.
