Walking your dog

There are many great spots in New Plymouth District to walk your dog, however there are some areas where dogs are banned or required to be on a lead.

Guidelines for dogs in public places

  • Your dog must be under proper control at all times.
  • You must carry a leash at all times when your dog is in a public place.
  • Your dog must not act aggressively or harm other animals or people.
  • Dog faeces must be picked up and disposed of appropriately.

Dogs are banned in the following areas:

  • New Plymouth central business district.
  • The Fernery in Pukekura Park.
  • Brooklands Zoo.
  • Ngamotu Beach and Reserve.
  • Fitzroy paddling pool and enclosure.
  • Urenui and Onaero domains.
  • Children’s playgrounds.
  • Within 200m of Lake Mangamahoe.
  • The island in the middle of Lake Rotomanu.
  • Wetland areas and the pond in Barrett Domain.
  • Sportsgrounds (area of play) during organised sports events.

From 9am to 6pm during daylight savings dogs are also banned from:

  • Oakura Beach and foreshore.
  • Fitzroy and East End beaches.

Dogs are required to be on a lead in the following areas:

  • Coastal Walkway from the Te Henui footbridge to Kawaroa Park playground.
  • Te Henui walkway, river and reserve – between the lower footbridge (near the river mouth) and the overhead car bridge on Devon St East.
  • Fitzroy, Waitara, Oakura, Inglewood and Okato shopping centres and shopping areas.
  • Pukekura and Brooklands park and gardens.
  • Oakura – along Tasman Parade and north along Messenger Terrace to Pitcairn Street, Oakura River and Corbett Park.
  • Liardet Street from Leach Street to and including the Coastal Walkway.
  • Puke Ariki Landing.

From 9am to 6pm during daylight savings dogs are also required to be on a lead at Bell Block beach and reserve between the public toilets and boat ramp.
