Walking Your Dog
The dog pound is a holding facility for dogs before being returned to their rightful or sometimes new owner.Once a dog is impounded, every attempt is made to contact the owner (where a current registration tag or disc or microchip identifies the dog). Every effort is made to make sure your dog is safe and cared for while in the pound. To have your dog released from the dog pound you will first need to pay impounding fees to cover the Council’s cost of picking up and caring for your dog. If your dog is not registered you will be required to pay the impounding fee and registration fee before your dog is released (it’s much cheaper to register your dog the usual way).
The dog pound is on Rifle Range Road. It is open to the public from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, phone 06-757 5470.The pound has an outside holding pen for dogs delivered by the public outside of opening hours. If you deliver a dog when the pound is closed, please phone us on 06-759 6060 and leave your name, address, date and details about where the dog was found. If it is a dog for re-housing please advise whether or not it is neutered and some details about the dog, e.g. its name and breed.
If the dog has any severe injuries, you may need to take it to a veterinary clinic or the SPCA.
