Coast Care

Coast Care is a community-based programme that aims to protect and sustain a variety of natural and man-made coastal areas. In Taranaki this area is from the Stony River in the south to Mohakatino in the north.

We monitor erosion and seasonal tidal events to minimise the risk of severe erosion on coastal areas, and manage its effects. Through the Coast Care programme, emphasis is put on education and the inevitability of erosion on this coast, and the variety of ways it can be managed.

Who is involved with Coast Care?

Residents, property owners, conservationists and beach users who are interested in protecting and managing their local coastal environment are involved with Coast Care. Their role is to advise us on areas of concern and to take part in community initiatives to restore and protect the dunes.

We are a member of the Coastal Dune Vegetation Network (CDVN), an organisation that encourages scientific and public involvement in the natural stabilisation of dunes around New Zealand.

With Taranaki Regional Council, we offer advice and assist Coast Care groups with resources such as native plants, building material and fertiliser.
