We are proposing some safety improvements along Mangorei Road, New Plymouth - from approximately 1524 Mangorei Road to the turning head at the end of the road.
This section of the road is very narrow. We want to widen the carriageway to provide a safer route for two-way traffic, while also minimising any increase in vehicle speeds along the route. The improvements include:
- From Property No.1524 to Morgans Road: 6m wide sealed carriageway, plus 2x 300mm unsealed shoulders.
- From Morgans Road to end of Mangorei Rd: 5.5m wide seal carriageway plus 2x 300mm unsealed shoulders.
Additional widening is planned at the horizontal curves also to allow for safer vehicle tracking, as well as earthworks benching at select locations along the route to achieve improved forward visibility.
The majority of the planned works are within Council-owned road reserves.
As part of the works, we are also planning a new off-road carpark close to the end of Mangorei Road to accomodate the increase of users accessing Mt Taranaki from Mangorei Road.
We are currently consulting with affected residents and stakeholders in a the area. Detailed designs will be developed shortly.
